the music...culture clash in new york city
The sound of Latin music in New York City. Eddie Palmieri, Joe Bataan, Cortijo, Machito.......the best kind of culture clash where Latin music met African - American Funk, Jazz and Soul leading to new forms of music that have since become standard.

in 1976 latin music in new york city was at a number of crossroads. salsa was starting to lose its momentum as a musical force and attention was starting to focus on other musical centres, such as puerto rico.

in new york, latin music could be played by anyone who grew up around it. this meant that you could be afro-american, like the group ocho, italian-spanish like bobby vince-paunetto, afro-filipino like joe bataan or whatever.

the overlapping of cultures in new york along with the complexities of attitudes of the first, second and third generations of immigrants were unique to the city and meant that the description of salsa as a pan-latin american style of music was too simplistic to describe new york's latin music.
